Greetings and welcome to English 10-1! This course is designed to use overarching questions and different genres of literature to teach you about literary elements and to improve your ability to critically analyze them verbally and visually.
To succeed in this class - YOU- must be willing to put for the effort.
There will be writing assignments, reading assignments, journaling, papers, essays, and projects. You should expect there to be homework. It is important to be organized and responsible and turn in assignments on time. Although you may work and/or be involved in extracurricular activities your first responsibility needs to be to your schoolwork.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this course coincide directly with the general outcomes stated in the Alberta Learning English/Language Arts Program of Studies (available online by visiting www.learning.gov.ab.ca. The six strands, or methods of learning, in all senior English classes are: reading, writing, listening, speaking and representing. These methods will be used throughout the course in order for students to meet the following general objectives:

The final grade for English 10-1 will be determined as follows:
Text Creation (Assignments and Projects): 15%
Quizzes: 10%
Essays: 15%
Unit Tests: 30%
Final Exam: 30% of the final grade will be based on the final exam. This examination will be written in the scheduled examination period at the end of the semester. The English 10-1 Final Exam is TWO parts: Part A encompasses one writing assignmentsand Part B is a multiple choice reading test.
ASSIGNMENT FORMAT
Please follow the guidelines below. If your assignments do not follow these guidelines, I will gladly await a copy that does.
1. Use ONLY blue or black ink for written assignments. Typing up assignments is encouraged as well.
2. Please double space all written assignments, and for word-processed documents, use only 12-point font, in either Times New Roman or Arial.
3. MLA format – Your name, Date, Course, and Instructor in the top left-hand corner of the first page of your assignment. We will go into more detail in class.
4. Assignments will be submitted via Turnitin:
COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Attendance:
If you miss a class due to lateness, illness, or any other reason, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed either from me, our lovely classroom website, or a fellow classmate. Also, be sure to collect any handouts/worksheets needed. Chronic absences will be referred to administration.
Preparedness:
It is your responsibility to bring any necessary books, materials, etc., needed for the class.
Late Assignments:
In terms of late/missing tests/ assignments, the procedure to follow will be determined via the teacher and administration. If more time is needed for an assignment, please discuss it with me prior to the due date, do not leave it to the last minute.
Cell Phones/Mobile Devices:
Any of these devices are not permitted during instructional time. If found without permission, the first time it will be mine for class, second strike it will be mine for the day, third strike it goes to administration and parents will need to pick it up. Music devices are allowed during independent work time, within reason and privilege.
Food:
Food and drink is permitted in the class, provided you clean up your mess afterwards. If this becomes a problem, overall, then food and drink will be banned from the classroom. Serious!
Respect:
Listen, work, and speak with this notion in mind. A positive and welcoming learning environment is of utmost importance.
Plagiarism:
“The unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work.” The bottom line: DO NOT COPY WORK THAT IS NOT YOURS. If you are unsure about what is acceptable and not acceptable, feel free to discuss with me. Any plagiarized work will result in an automatic zero, and parents/guardians will be notified.
3 Strikes:
The basic rule of thumb is as follows: the first offense, I will speak with you directly; the second offense will be a phone call home; and the third will result in an office referral. ‘Offenses’ include behavioural issues, inconsistent attendance/lates, missing assignments, etc. This rule can, at times, be subject to change, depending on certain circumstances.
Silent Reading:
Students will be given approximately 15 minutes each day to do silent reading or, if permitted, they can use this opportunity to catch up on missing assignments. This also reflects back on your preparedness, please ensure your reading material is with you prior to attending class.
Extra Help:
It will be your responsibility to use your tutorial time if you require extra help on an assignment, need to pick up work, etc. If I am not available, you may send an e-mail and/or make an appointment at an agreeable time.

- Drama: Julius Caesar– Shakespeare
- Novel Study: To Kill a Mockingbird– Harper Lee
- Summer Read: The Alchemist -- Paulo Coelho
- Short Stories & Poetry: Students will be reading a variety of short stories and poetry
- Visual/Multimedia/Nonfiction Texts: Variety of news articles, images, videos, media studies, essays

ASSESSMENT:
- Formative/Summative Assessment:Formative assessment allows students to self assess and reflect on their work in order for them to master outcomes and do well on their Summative assessment.
- Personal and Critical Essays– you will have a number of essays for the novel studies that you will be conducting and there will also be personal essays that are more creative in nature.
- Quizzes and Projects– This will encompass chapter questions, chapter quizzes and a variety of projects that each unit will cover.
- Vocabulary and Grammar– Expanding your vocabulary and strengthening your grammar is the key to success when it comes to reading comprehension and writing essays. There will be a heavy focus on this for all units in order to enhance your understanding of the content
